Raced 20+ years ago, but have only had 4×4’s and SUV’s since the first kid came along.  We recently picked up a 2009 Subaru Legacy (NA) for my daughter to start driving with the ulterior motive of Dad using it to get back into racing.  She is interested in getting it on the track as well.  Aside from a solid car, proper helmet and a good attitude, is there anything else we need to get started?  Also, what is required for my daughter to eventually start racing.  She’s currently 15 with a learners permit.

    Thanks,

    Adam Rutherford

Welcome back.  I think your daughter can drive with a learners permit if you are in the passenger’s seat (maybe someone with better information will chime in to verify that).

That would be great if I can get her on the track before she has her driver’s license.  As I am finding out, she’s a natural at late apex and late braking in the corners…..

I wish there was autocrossing available when and where I grew up as a kid.  Instead, I used the local public roadways, much to the chagrin of my neighbors.

Thanks and have a great day.

You may want to also look into the Tire Rack Street Survival program for her – https://www.tirerack.com/content/tirerack/desktop/en/events_sponsorships/calendar.html.

Because of the current conditions, there schedule doesn’t look very good right now, but we put on one session in Eagle, at the airport, usually in October or November.  It allows teens to experience car control with emphasis on emergency situations.  There are two classroom sessions and lots of behind the wheel time to put into action what was talked about in the classroom.

That looks like another great opportunity for her.  More importantly, my wife thinks its great as well.  I hope it is a go this year.  Adam
