Though we’re now in 2020, I’ve not seen an approved 2020 Snell standard for helmets. Therefore, I believe the 2019 standards are still in place. For most of us, that means that the current standard (2015) and the previous two standards (2010, 2005) are still legal for SCCA Solo competition. I’ve attached a pdf of the approved stickers you should be looking for inside your helmet liner.

We’ll update this post as new information becomes available. Thanks!

***2020 Helmet Certification Label Chart*** – posted 2019-12-05
Your helmet must have one of these labels visible. The DOT standard (FMVSS 218) alone is NOT sufficient!

The reference sheet says that SA2020 certification will be “Available October 1, 2020.”

For your convenience I’ve attached a PDF of the 2020 Helmet Certification. For those like me, this is the last year the SA2005 can be used.

Just an FYI update on helmet certification for 2021. At the beginning of 2020 I posted that 2020 would be the last year that SA2005 helmets could be used. Although I ended up not racing in 2020 I was expecting to have to purchase a new helmet in 2021. To my surprise I now see that SA2005 use has been extended for another year (good through 12/31/2021 – see attachment).

As for my not racing in 2020, that was due to a diagnosis of cancer at the end of 2019. As a result I spent the first 6 months of 2020 in treatment. That, in combination with my age, compromised immune system and COVID-19 I was not able to attend. However, my cancer is now in remission. Once I get my vaccine shot I hope to be able to return to racing sometime later this year. So until then, I will be monitoring the race results and looking forward to seeing my many friends again in the near future.

    Stay safe!

That is great news!  As trying on helmets has largely disappeared with COVID restrictions, it is good to make one more year on the 2005 helmets.

    Hi all,

I have a Bell Qualifier DLX full-face helmet that I wear on my motorcycle. It has the stickers on the back that show it is ECE 22.05 compliant but the tags inside the helmet are work out. Is this acceptable?

    Thanks for the input,

    Rob

I ask our Chief of Tech (Mike Forsythe) to answer you helmet question.  If you can determine if the certification of your helmet is 2005 or later it could help.

the sticker that we need to go by is the one that should be under the padding, not the one sewn to it. it usually has a holographic symbol on it. some are harder to find than others. if no sticker can be found it is not allowed. having said that, safety has a final say on it, and may allow that helmet to be used. also due to covid i cant check helmets anyway it is on you to make sure you are compliant.

    Hi Ken and Mike,

Thank you for the feedback. That was exactly what I needed.

    Rob.
