Grew up watching my parents autocross and finally have a vehicle I hopefully can use. Couple of questions:

    1) Am I allowed to participate with a stock Ford Edge ST?
    2) What class would I sign up for?
    3) Do I need to sign up for a membership or just pay per event?
    4) Is a helmet the only required safety device needed?
    5) I have mobility limitations – can’t stand very long or walk very far – will there be ways in which I can help?

If someone doesn’t respond with a better class, just register for your best guess and ask again when you check-in.  You do need to be a member of SCCA.  You can be a full member or you can get a weekend membership.  Yes a helmet is required to protect your noggin, but no other personal safety devices are required.  When you check in let them know of you mobility issues and you should be given an appropriate work assignment.

I’m really sorry, but the Ford Edge ST would not be able to participate.  Our insurance company has mandated that vehicles meet a certain guideline for roll over risk, and the Ford Edge ST exceeds the guideline.

Specifically, if a vehicle is not classed (I don’t see the Ford Edge ST classed), then we are to use a measurement based formula to determine if the vehicle meets the guideline.  The guideline comes down to does the vehicle height exceed the average trackwidth?  In the case of the Ford Edge ST, unfortunatally the answer is “yes”.  From what I can find online, the Ford Edge ST has a height of 68″, and a trackwidth of 64.8″.  Since 68 is greater than 64.8, the vehicle exceeds the guideline, and cannot run.

I hate to tells folks they cannot participate.  Do you have another vehicle you might be able to use?  Perhaps something you can borrow?

I understand, I knew SUV’s typically can’t run.  Hopefully insurance will change in the future and realize that the car has a larger brake package, larger sway bars and sport suspension, but alas, I’m am not the one putting money on the line.

Thanks for the follow-up, I do appreciate the fast responses!
